The Nikolaus College has earned a name for itself since its founding in 1990. This name itself is the perfect embodiment of the way the monasterys history, personalities and the work it does are interwoven.
During the period of the Andechs-Meranian Counts, the Mount Chapel had been consecrated in the name of Saint Nikolaus. Even today, Saint Nikolaus is one of the main patron saints of the pilgrimage church. In 1455, Nikolaus Cusanus, one of the major philosophers of the late middle ages, also played a significant part in founding the Benedictine monastery on the Holy Mount. In more recent times, it was mainly the St Nikolausanstalt (Saint Nikolaus Institution) that until 1932 helped young people who had no family by enabling them to work in the home and outside to pave the way for them to make an independent living.
Nikolaus College 2009 Program and Perspectives
2009 is also a year when the Nikolaus College will be staging a series of events relating to both liturgical as well as pastoral topics. As the regions main spiritual centre the Nikolaus College at Andechs Monastery is making its contribution to making sure that pastoral care and counselling is really reaching the people and helping them. The seminars and events are not just aimed at full-time employees and volunteers working in parish service, but also at anybody else who is interested. The Nikolaus College would like to show people new ways of gaining new insights into his or her own spiritual development. This in turn may also help generate important impulses for the further development of peoples involvement both on a religious as well as on a social level.
