The pilgrim’s symbol of Andechs

The pilgrim’s symbol of Andechs is the sign of identification used by pilgrims, guests and friends of the Holy Mount; it is comparable to the shell symbol used by pilgrims for identification on their way to Santiago de Compostela. It is available at the Andechs Monastery Shop in an initially limited edition  for the price of € 4,50. Based on a century-old design the Andechs pilgrim’s symbol, about 3 cm long, testifies today to the great tradition and vitality of the Andechs pilgrimage.

On the ring surrounding the design the following words are to be seen:
HEIL-IG PERG ANDEX IN OBER-BAIR.

The Andechs coat of arms has been inserted into the lower half of the ring’s interior. In the centre there are three discs on which the Holy Three Hosts are depicted. On the lower left there is a finger, on the lower right the IHS symbol and above these in the middle the crucifixion.

For 2005, the anniversary year, the workshops of the Maria Laach Benedictine Abbey were commissioned to produce a replica of the Andechs pilgrim’s symbol made of polished brass that was designed by Christian Fischbach. It is a souvenir for all the pilgrims who come to the Holy Mount and is a sign of solidarity with previous generations who, like people today, took their worries, their joys and above all their thanks to the Holy Mount.

A Bit of Monastery Shop History

The Monastery Shop is located where it has stood since 1890, the previous site of the outer monastery gate wherein the gatekeeper lived until 1803, just to the right of the gate arch.

In what today are the rooms of the Monastery Shop there was once wax-works wherein many votive candles were drawn or hand-manufactured, according to oral recollection.

At that time wax was a precious and expensive raw material for the making of candles so that most votive candles were made around a central wooden core so that savings could be achieved at the bottom of the candle while still obtaining the desired thickness of the lower portion. This portion of the decorative candle was lavishly decorated and outfitted with an iron cap which ended in a thorn or a pin. A thinner candle to be burned in the church could be affixed on top of this metal extension.

The original larger room which housed the shop was decorated with a ceiling piece from the Wessobrunner School. Unfortunately, this work was destroyed in the processing of extinguishing the great fire of April 25, 1964,  which was necessary to save the entire building. Following this conflagration, the Monastery Shop was relocated for four years in the old Pharmacy above the Church. The shop exists today just as it was when it was renovated 35 years old.
