Jubilee Year 2005
In 2005 Andechs is celebrating a jubilee – the first Benedictine monastery was founded there by Duke Albrecht III in 1455 and the first residents were monks from a monastery at Tegernsee. This was the beginning of 550 years of monastic history that was only to be interrupted by a break in 1803 caused by the secularisation. In 1846, however, the property was bought by King Ludwig I to be used as an estate for his Saint Boniface Abbey that was to be founded in Munich. It was the start of a new golden age.

With his common-sense approach to founding religious orders and ruling the land (“stifften und ordnen mit rechter vernunfft”), Duke Albrecht III managed to ensure that there would be a permanent supervision of pilgrimages to the sacred treasures of Andechs. Their beginnings can be traced back to the time of the Counts of Andechs who had a castle on the present site of the church. The centrepieces of the collection of the venerable relics are the Three Holy Hosts.

The main part of the church as it stands  today was built during the rule of Duke Ernst, the father of Duke Albrecht III. He was also responsible for coining the name “Holy Mount” referring to the large number of venerable relics that are stored there.

For the 300th anniversary of the monastery’s founding in 1755 the abbot at that time, Bernhard Schütz, had the church redecorated in Rococo style by Johann Baptist Zimmermann. It was called the “Coelum Andecense” – the Andechs Heaven and after many long years of restoration work it now shines again in all its former glory.

The abbot and the convent of the St. Boniface Benedictine Abbey in Munich would like to cordially invite you to take part in our jubilee celebrations.
